To The Lighthouse:
Steam of Consciousness deals with the continuous unedited flow of conscious experience through the mind, which is a technique which was originated by William James and then James Joyce, used this technique after that Virginia Woolf popularized this by using this technique in the novel “To the Lighthouse”. She used this Technique of Consciousness and in which the complication of human relationship, and also class conflicts and all this things can be found. With the help of this technique she wants to show about people’s mind sets and their mentality and behaviour as well and various stages of mind such as conscious, unconscious and subconscious. Narrative technique and Stream of consciousness both can be observed so it helps Virginia Woolf to put her ideas in an effective manner.
2 Yes I am totally agree with the point that this novel “To the Lighthouse” is a tribute to Mrs Ramsay and critique also because At the beginning of “To the Lighthouse”, Mrs Ramsay's daughters are presented as sporting with "infidel ideas and the character of Mrs Ramsay is round character that’s why we can say that This novel is a critique of Mrs Ramsay and Virginia Woolf also dedicates or rather tributes this novel to this character as one may find out the struggles of Mrs Ramsay in this novel and Lily has long been regarded as a secondary character and Virginia Woolf is present in the character of Lily Briscoe so this novel can be regarded as a critique of Mrs Ramsay.Mrs Ramsay has been shown as an ordinary house wife and Woolf herself was against of that ideas therefore we can say that it is more critique than tribute.
3 Lighthouse stands for Mrs Ramsay because she is harbour for her family member and very much spiritual guidance. She takes care of her family members and her husband. She manages ego of her husband and if we talk about considering symbolically through presentation we can say that symbol of Mrs Ramsay as we read in the novel she always indicates as an emotional guide for other characters.so we say that she is a central character in the novel.one thing that here we cannot forget that between husband and wife writer creates some distance between them and also their children. Here we can take one example of Mr Ramsay and his son James. If we talk about writer and her biographical context, we can say that writer’s character is more presented in Lily Briscoe’s characters.
4 In the novel we find two myths, Oedipus and Pagan myth. Oedipus myth deals with the character of James who was a youngest son of the Ramsays’. He also loves his mother deeply and feels a murderous antipathy towards his father. So he was suffering from the Oedipus complex in this novel through James character. We say that in the novel father and son are symbolically parched. Phallic symbol represents feminine Mrs Ramsay.
5 As far as my knowledge is concerned this novel can be called as a Kunstlerroman novel. It means artist’s novel. This type of novel it also shows us to artist’s growth. In the beginning of the novel we see that Lily starts to paint her painting but she leaves her painting and after some years passes she starts to give her final ending of her painting. So here we can say that during her time when she left her painting she was also thinking about her painting and that time she also got some new thing and various ideas come from her mind about her painting which she wanted to complete.
6 Here in the novel we can say that the beginning of this novel is not proper at the beginning we come to know the quarrel between Mr and Mrs Ramsay. There is complexity of human relationship between these both characters. But at the end we can say the improvement of the relation between James and Mr Ramsay. At the end of this novel is open ended and also ends with Lily’s painting and there is no clear vision of Lily about Ramsay in the painting and at last this family reaches to the lighthouse.
